Macron Says France, India Reject Hegemony, Uphold Rule of Law
Speaking at a news conference alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his three-day visit to India, Macron said, “We believe in a third way, in a free and open Indo-Pacific, in cooperation in defense technology and trade, and in the determination not to submit to any form of hegemony.”
The meeting in Mumbai, India’s financial hub, included delegation-level discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. Macron emphasized that both nations value predictability, effective multilateralism, and adherence to international law.
He described the Franco-Indian relationship as being “in a phase of remarkable acceleration,” reflecting shifts in the global order. Macron reiterated the importance of strategic autonomy, noting that France and India aim to avoid being “drawn into the conflicts of a few” and instead pursue “an open and clear-eyed partnership approach.”
“We believe in international trade, and we reject methods of coercion,” the French president added, underlining a commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect and shared principles.
