Tarique Rahman Becomes Bangladesh’s Eleventh Prime Minister
The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Mohammed Shahabuddin, who administered the oath to Rahman and his 49-member Cabinet. The event took place in front of the parliament complex in Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, 297 members of parliament were sworn in as part of the country’s 13th legislature. The newly formed parliament includes representatives from a bloc led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. These lawmakers emerged from last week’s elections, widely described in reports as historic. The vote marked the first national election since the 2024 uprising that ended the Awami League’s 15-year rule.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by a range of international dignitaries. Among those present were Muhammad Yunus, who headed the outgoing interim administration, along with members of his team. Foreign guests included Mohamed Muizzu, Tshering Tobgay, Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, and UK Under-Secretary Seema Malhotra.
The interim administration had governed the country since Aug. 8, 2024, after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina departed for India on Aug. 5 amid political unrest. Under Yunus’ leadership, elections were organized last week, paving the way for the first elected government in a year and a half.
The Awami League was excluded from participating in the recent vote. As a result, the BNP and its partners achieved a commanding two-thirds majority, winning 212 seats. In the 300-seat legislature, elections in three constituencies were postponed. Additionally, 50 seats reserved for women will be distributed among parties based on their share of the overall vote.
