Recovery teams are "continuing" their search-and-rescue mission following the deadly detonation in the state's East Jaintia Hills region, where additional victims have been pulled from the wreckage, a radio station reported.
The explosion occurred at an unauthorized mining operation, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma disclosed earlier. The state official revealed that authorities have launched a "comprehensive inquiry" into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Law enforcement has opened a criminal investigation, with two individuals already taken into custody in connection with the blast, police confirmed.
