India, EU Ink Defense Initiatives of EU Member States
Under the security and defense partnership (SDP), Indian firms will be able to engage in the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, a €178 billion financial instrument designed to provide defense funding to member states. India becomes the third Asian country to establish a dedicated defense and security partnership with the EU, following Japan and South Korea.
“The signing of the technology and defense partnership between India and the European Union is a reflection of this trust in action, and it brings us together in an increasingly complex global environment,” said Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
The agreement focuses on modern security challenges and emerging defense domains, including maritime security, cybersecurity, and counterterrorism. Singh emphasized that the deal will shift India’s relationship with the EU from a purely procurement-based model to one of co-development in technology and defense.
India and the EU conducted extensive joint defense activities last year, including naval exercises in the Indian Ocean, Gulf of Guinea, and Gulf of Aden. Earlier this month, India also signed a letter of intent with the United Arab Emirates for a broader strategic defense partnership centered on security cooperation.
While Germany has urged India to reduce its reliance on Russian weapons, New Delhi maintains that its defense purchases are guided solely by national interests. In addition to Russia, India’s key military suppliers include France, Israel, and the United States.
