India Reports Online Scams Cost Indians Over USD800M
Over 50% of these losses were traced back to scammers operating out of Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, under the Home Ministry, disclosed that these cyber scams are orchestrated from highly secure locations, believed to be controlled by Chinese criminal networks.
The scam hubs reportedly exploit trafficked victims, including Indian nationals, to deceive unsuspecting targets, as detailed by media.
An Indian government official informed the newspaper that the Foreign Ministry had recently convened a meeting with Cambodian representatives in New Delhi to develop a coordinated strategy against the threat. During the discussions, Cambodian officials reportedly asked India to provide exact location details of scam centers operating within their territory to facilitate targeted action.
In a significant development in March, New Delhi successfully repatriated 549 Indian citizens rescued from cyber-crime dens near the Myanmar-Thailand border. Victims, including Indians and others from Asia and Africa, were lured with false IT job promises into Thailand or Myanmar before being trafficked to illicit cyber-crime centers in lawless border regions of Myanmar.
An Indian official shared with media, “With the help of intelligence agencies and testimonies of rescued people, the Indian government has identified at least 45 such scam compounds in Cambodia, five in Laos, and one in Myanmar.”
This alarming crisis first surfaced in September 2024 when media outlets exposed that thousands of Indians were trapped across Southeast Asia, forced into servitude as “cyber slaves.”
